HOUSTON, TEXAS -- Tropical Cyclone NICHOLAS has intensified to a Category 1 Hurricane and has made landfall south of Houston City, with maximum sustained winds up to 120 km/h. Power has been knocked out to over 485,000 homes and businesses in Texas so far on Tuesday and will likely cause thousands of additional outages as it continues to move through the Houston area.
A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for areas in Brazoria County (south of Houston) in response to NICHOLAS, while response teams have been deployed to the area of landfall.
After landfall, NICHOLAS is forecasted to weaken as it moves over southeastern Texas on September 14th and 15th. After that, it will reach southwestern Louisiana on the midday of September 15th as a tropical depression.
A Hurricane Warning has been issued for areas southeastern of Houston, while a Tropical Storm warning and Storm Surge Warnings are in effect for southeastern Texas. Heavy rain with strong winds is forecasted over southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana on September 14th through 15th.
