A UPS driver and another person were killed after a small plane crashed into the Southern California neighborhood of Santee on Monday afternoon. At least two others were injured.

Deputy Fire Chief Justin Matsushita called the scene “pretty brutal” and “unsurvivable.”

A UPS truck was also struck and TV footage showed the vehicle completely engulfed in flames. The shipping company confirmed to the Associated Press that one of their own had died in the accident.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of our employee, and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the company said. “We also send our condolences for the other individuals who are involved in this incident, and their families and friends.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if the victims were on the ground or on board the Cessna which was reportedly on its way to Yuma, Arizona.

An elderly couple was rescued from one of two homes that were destroyed, according to witnesses.

Resident Andrew Pelloth, 30, was working from home when he heard a loud boom, according to the AP.

“My initial thought was that it was a meteorite coming down,” he said. “I could hear it falling and then some kind of explosion.”

The second home that was destroyed by the crash had reportedly been recently sold and was vacant on Monday.

An air traffic control official said that plane was experiencing some issues while in the air and was trying to land at the nearby Gillespie Field, just a short distance away from Santana High School. The school said on Twitter that “all students are secure.”

“We do not yet know how many people were on board,” said Donnell Evans, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. “The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates.”

Three years ago, two people and a dog were killed when an aircraft came down in Santee, according to reports.
