Massive blaze destroys warehouse in New Jersey

A massive four-alarm fire fueled by tires and gasoline destroyed a New Jersey auto auction warehouse and up to 60 cars inside, fire officials said.

Video obtained by WPVI shows firefighters in Pennsauken dousing the huge flames throughout the US Auto Auction building, where the initial call was received at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday as the raging inferno shot into the sky.

Pennsauken Fire Chief Joseph Palumbo said at least three businesses inside the warehouse were gutted. The blaze grew so large because of the number of vehicles inside the building, as well as their tires and gasoline, he said.

Palumbo estimated 40 to 60 vehicles parked tightly together inside the block-long, 43,000-square-foot building at the site were totally torched, according to the Cherry Hill Courier-Post.

Due to the scale of the blaze, firefighters never went inside the site, Palumbo said.

Firefighters also had to deal with high winds that sent embers and burning debris into nearby neighborhoods.

“We had a couple of engine companies deployed to that neighborhood for patrol to make sure there was no exposure problems,” Palumbo told WPVI.

No injuries were reported and no firefighters were hurt, according to NJ.com. The warehouse on South Crescent Boulevard was not occupied at the time, fire officials said.

Firefighters were still at the scene early Wednesday, putting out leftover hot spots.

Southbound lanes of Route 130 nearby remained closed, but the northbound section was reopened, WPVI reported.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday, a Pennsauken Fire Department employee who declined to provide his name told The Post.

“They’re still out there, they have to dig through it,” he said of the scene. “They need to find the cause — it’s still being investigated.”
