MAJOR FIRE
Officials said the fire is on the grounds of Schnitzer Steel Industries. A fire broke out at a metal recycling yard in Everett on Wednesday morning, sending up a huge plume of smoke visible from communities surrounding the city.
Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria said the fire is on the property of Schnitzer Steel Industries, which operates a metal recycling facility on the city’s waterfront. The mayor said Everett fire and police have responded to the scene. According to the Everett firefighters’ union, the blaze is in a building at 69 Rover St. and has reached a 3rd alarm.
All the employees in the building have been accounted for and gotten out of the structure.
The union said a call has gone out to the state’s hazmat team for the fire.
Everett Police Chief Steve Mazzie is asking the public to avoid the areas of Robin and Dexter streets due to the fire.
Thick black smoke from the large conflagration stretched across the sky, visible in neighboring Cambridge and Boston.
