California earthquake: Magnitude 6.2 tremor strikes off coast of Golden State

Updated: Jun 13, 2023

CRITICAL INCIDENT NOTIFICATION

EARTHQUAKE

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off the shore of northern California.

The tremor took place 24 miles west of Petrolia at a depth of 5.6 miles, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

Residents reported buildings shaking in the city of Redding, which is close to the Nevada border. The quake was so powerful it smashed the windows of buildings along the coast.

It struck at around 12.10pm (local time) with Americans in the area describing it as a 'big one'. Local newspaper editor Caroline Titus tweeted pictures of shattered windows in Ferndale, California.

"Talked to some Main Street visitors from Crescent City. They watched from the corner of Main and Ocean and described cars just violently rocking back and forth.

"I was here for the ‘92 quakes. This one felt similar but shorter. Less damage with a 6.2 but still frightening. Everyone on edge.

"Lots of 'diving under the table' and 'thought I had a flat tire'. I was outside and first thought the sound was a massive wind coming our way."

In a video shared on social media, one resident showed how the tremor had rocked her home, throwing open her cupboards and smashing glasses.

She said: "That was a big one. Just stuff out of the cupboard, on the ground, broken glasses, knocked all of the dishes into the sink."
